So far as the United States seems to be concerned, it is only a slight overstatement to say that Muslims and Arabs are essentially seen as either oil suppliers or potential terrorists. Very little of the detail, the human density, the passion of Arab-Moslem life has entered the awareness of even those people whose profession it is to report the Arab world. What we have instead is a series of crude, essentialized caricatures of the Islamic world presented in such a way as to make that world vulnerable to military aggression.

Today in history: May 16, 1934 - The Minneapolis General Strike of 1934 begins. It grew out of a strike by Teamsters against most of the trucking companies operating in Minneapolis, a major distribution center for the Upper Midwest. The strike began on May 16 in the Market District (the modern day Warehouse District) and the conflict lasted periodically throughout the summer. The strike paved the way for the organization of over-the-road drivers and the growth of the Teamsters union, as well as making Minneapolis a union town. The 1934 Minneapolis strike along with the 1934 West Coast Longshore Strike and the 1934 Toledo Auto-Lite Strike were key catalysts for the rise of industrial unionism in the 1930s.

“Teamster Rebellion” by Farrell Dobbs should be required reading for every communist. Unfortunately the U.S. SWP hoards its copyrights worse than the RIAA so it can’t be found online. But definitely worth looking for a used copy.

Is not all the stupid chatter of most of our newspapers the babble of fools who suffer from the fixed idea of morality, legality, christianity and so forth, and only seem to go about free because the madhouse in which they walk takes in so broad a space?

Yahoo purportedly wants to incorporate its products as features of the site. I don’t know about you, but… Yahoo’s products are pretty shitty and I’d rather not be forced to use them if I want to continue using this site

Population growth and climate change explained by Hans Rosling →

Let me show you the world, says Swedish academic Han Rosling as he demonstrates the dynamics of population growth, child mortality and carbon dioxide emissions. The challenge for the world is to get everyone out of extreme poverty and get the richest people to use less fossil fuels so that everyone can share their energy levels, he says

Obama's Arctic strategy sets off a climate time bomb US National Strategy for the Arctic Region prioritises corporate 'economic opportunities' at the expense of everyone else →

“One week ago, the Obama administration launched its National Strategy for the Arctic Region, outlining the government’s strategic priorities over the next 10 years. The release of the strategy came about a week after the Office of Science and Technology Policy within the Executive Office of the President at the White House Complex hosted a briefing with international Arctic scientists.

Despite giving lip service to the values of environmental conservation, the new document focuses on how the US can manage the exploitation of the region’s vast untapped oil, gas and mineral resources in cooperation with other Arctic powers.”
